Kyle Brown died in his mother's arms after drinking white cider from the age of The family of a man who drank three litres of white cider a day to deal with mental health problems have blamed his death on the price of alcohol. Calls have been made increase the price of strong, white cider following the death of year-old Kyle Brown last month. Kyle first began to drink at 16 years old to deal with his severe anxiety and agoraphobia - including a fear of leaving the house.
As his addiction grew he went on to drink three litres of 7. Kyle's mum Joanne Handford said her son died holding her hand on August 9 after vomiting blood. She said: "He started drinking to give him confidence to go out with his friends - that's how it started. He just thought cider was cider. After he 18 he refused help and there was nothing I could do. I tried to get him some mental health support but as he was an adult then I couldn't.
As his addiction grew Kyle started to suffer from seizures whenever he tried to give up drinking. He was later diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. A bottle of white cider is 7. There's nothing in it but chemicals. That came first - he wouldn't go anywhere without it. He was like a baby with a dummy. For Kyle things began to change three and a half years ago after meeting his partner Luke online. After splitting his time between his home in Skelmersdale, Lancashire and Luke's home in Cardiff, he underwent a complete detox.
Joanne, 51, said: "Luke would come and get him and bring him home as Kyle didn't like to travel alone. He got him to go to hospital which was was a mammoth task and slept on the floor of the hospital for four days so Kyle wasn't alone. In a heart-breaking turn of events, Kyle's health started to deteriorate in front of his mother and partner but refused to go to hospital due to his anxiety. Joanne said: "His seizures were becoming more and more often.
When he was he was vomiting the cider was coming back up. I was grieving for him before he died. She said: "He was amazing, he was so handsome. He could have been a model but he didn't have the confidence. Kyle's partner Luke Stiff, from Caerau , said: "When I first met Kyle three and a half years ago he had his addiction already. Most people would have walked away from an addict but I knew I could show him a better life. Through the help of those around him Kyle began making progress to deal with his anxiety - including overcoming an inability to use the phone due to anxiety.
But Luke, 36, has criticised health care services for failing to reach out to Kyle after his detox. He added: "I just miss him so much. Every day I would worry I would get that phone call. The seizures were horrendous, to see someone go through that. Hotel-worker Luke said Kyle's death came only days before he was due to travel up to see him. He said: "I was due to go up there and I was told on the Thursday that he had died. It absolutely ripped me apart. When I go to sleep I see his face.
Following Kyle's death Joanne and Luke are now calling for an increase in the price of alcohol across the UK. In June, the National Assembly for Wales voted to give ministers the power to set a minimum price for alcohol. Ministers will have the discretion to set the level of the minimum price, which is expected to be around 50p per unit.
